As at 1898, the war was at its peak and was nearly coming to an end; on the 4th of April 1898, the Americans intervened through President McKinley ordering war, mainly to end the devastating effect of the war in Cuba on humanitarian grounds and protect American citizens and interests in the island of Cuba. The intervention was also to protect American and Cuban trade and commerce as well as its strategic rights in that particular hemisphere. Through the Treaty of Paris December 10, 1898 America was able to stamp its foreign policy of expansion and imperialism through the acquisition of Philippines, annexation of Hawaii and the acquisition of Puerto Rico, and this occurred after Spain had surrendered. This expansionist theory resonated well with the American public opinion as it seemed to guarantee freedom to every person in the world and also made Americans proud of their institutions especially the military. In addition, it created avenues for commercial expansion in terms of trade in strategic locations of the world. The acquisition of Panama Canal by the US government was the epitome of imperialism by the government of the United States, and this is because of the economic benefits it offered the American government as well as its strategic importance in terms of geopolitical position. It should be noted that the canal offered the government of USA constant flow of revenue as well as saving the economy in terms of inter-coastal trade and commerce. The canal was however not strategic to the US government military-wise as it could be bombed at any time by adversaries such as Japan and the Soviet Union. The destruction would cause war losses that could only be recovered after a year or so during war time and a massive loss of 17 days in trave l time as occurred during its sabotage during the Battle of Guadalcanal. This forced the US military to maintain a heavy presence of navy at sea just in case the canal was attacked. Assignment â€Å"Introduction to Leadership† Essay Leadership styles: When looking at leadership style I have to look at what as a manager I am good at and that has got me to the position as Manager and what I need to do to progress my team. Firstly I need to gain the respect of my team by treating everyone fairly. Leadership is defined as ‘the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal’. The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and cohesive behaviour. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. A leader is someone who stands not only for his cause but takes responsibility and motivates other individuals also. There is a clear difference between being a manager and a leader. A leader is a motivation for others and inspires individuals to aim high and attain that aim. However a manager only supervises over his subordinates. Power naturally comes to a leader but that power is not a tool of leader. To be a good lead I have to look at the managers around me and what in my opinion makes them good or bad leaders and also if these are traits that I can adapt and use or ultimately will they be out of character for me and be counterproductive for me. Using the Paul and Kenneth Blanchard model of Situational Leadership:- Telling: this is where a person has low ability and low willingness maybe a new starter. This is the style I would use for a new starter who does not yet have the skills to operate independently. Selling: this is where a person would have low ability but high willingness. This style I would use on someone like Dave in the office he wants to do a good job but is of an age that he does not quite have the skills he needs but he more than makes up for that with his knowledge of the job. So I need to draw on his experience to help him achieve his goals. Participating: this is for a person will high ability and low willingness. With no two members of staff the same I have had to employ different leadership style i.e. with Dave he is coming up to retirement and I would say he was low on ability he has a high willingness to complete tasks set so with him I would employ the telling leadership style which was very similar with my two new starters but as the months progressed they both showed high ability but one was more willing to achieve than the other so with Becca I had to show a participating style of leadership and with Mel I am able to delegate more as she showed both high ability and high willingness. The factory as a whole is very unionised and whilst the majority of the staff are in the union they do generally like to get the job done and if this means working long stressful hours they do. When we are in these situations I will change my leadership style to match the situation where it be acting on their behalf to speak to people who they have issue with (maybe another member of staff or even customers) or by re-enforcing procedures that are there to make the lives easier or by finding courses that will ultimately give them the tools to make their jobs easier in the long run. I have spoken to members of the team and other managers around the office and all have said I try to do too much and that I need to â€Å"learn to delegate† and whilst this doesn’t come naturally to me (my preferred leadership style was telling and participating) I have taken their comments on board and have started to delegate a lot more around the team and focused on other areas within the team that would help them to improve and grow. I can improve myself as a leader by listening to others and taking advice and giving and receiving feedback and also by doing courses and re assessing myself to look at things from a different angle and point of view. The attorney general planned a list of ninety supposedly disloyal organizations, none of which was given the right to prove its loyalty to the United States. The Loyalty Review Board investigated more than three million employees that caused a nation wide security conscious. Later, individual states began ferreting out Communist spies in their area. Now, Americans cannot continue to enjoy traditional freedoms in the face of a ruthless international conspiracy known as the Soviet Communism. In 1949, eleven accused Communists were brought before a New York jury for abusing the Smith Act of 1940, which prohibited conspiring to teach the violent overthrow of the government. The eleven Commun ist leaders were convicted and sentenced to prison. In 1950, Alger Hiss, formerly an employee of the Department of State, was convicted of perjury. Born in November 11, 1904, he grew up shabby-genteel in Baltimore, Maryland. Lean and boyishly handsome, Hiss was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and of Harvard Law School and was a law clerk to the Supreme Court Justice, Felix Frankfurter and later a clerk for Associate justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. The emergence of technology has brought about different social effects. Some have lost while others have gained from the technology. A great part of technology involves working with machines and this has resulted into less human labor and most of the people have been rendered jobless by the machines. Some people have become wealthier while others have become poor and this has created a gap between the two groups. If you are downloading unauthorized software at work on a work computer you could face being removed from you Job. You are opening up the business to potential threats from outside the company. Secrets that are contained on computers are now vulnerable. If this information gets out you could destroy the company. Most companies have policies in place and administrative restrictions that prevent this from happening but they are not completely secure. While there is all sorts of software available for download on the internet, it would be ill advised to download it. You never know what you are going to get besides the software. Some of these programs can hide viruses so well that your anti-virus software cannot detect them until it is too late. The easiest way to prevent these issues is to not download anything that you do not know where it came from. Section Two Tower Dust, Heat, and Static There are a few natural things that can harm the computer and these include dust, heat, and static. With this method of cleaning the inside of the computer the purpose is to touch the parts of the computer as little as Seibel. You will have a mess to clean up after you are done blowing the computer out. Another method used to clean the inside of the computer is with a cloth designed for cleaning the computer. Micro-fiber and cotton cloths would be anti-static and not harm you r computer. You would simply then wipe down all of the surfaces inside the computer removing all of the dust. This is why the keyboard needs to be cleaned from time to time. One of the first things you need to do is to unhook you keyboard from the computer, if it is a wired keyboard. You will then turn the keyboard upside down and shake it to remove any loose particles from inside the keyboard. While holding the keyboard upside down you can also use a can of compressed air to spray between the keys and remove particles from there. To clean the around the keys, you can use rubbing alcohol and a q-tip or cotton swab to dissolve any liquids that have been spilt inside your keyboard. Use caution with this though, it could discord your keyboard if it is too strong. Test the strength of the alcohol on the back of the computer keyboard or another place where it will not be noticed easily. After you have tested the alcohol for disconsolation, you can use a cloth or cotton swabs to wipe the keys of the keyboard. You really want to focus on frequently used keys like the shift key, enter key, and the space bar to get them clean. Once you have he keys cleaned to satisfaction you can wipe down the rest of the keyboard. If you are using a wired keyboard you will need to plug it back in to the computer tower. If you have an older mouse that has a ball in the bottom of it you will have to remove the ring around the ball. There are arrows on the bottom of the mouse so you know which way to turn the disk. Once you have the disk out of the bottom you can remove the ball from the mouse. You will see a couple of rollers inside of it. Clean these rollers off with a q-tip so that there is nothing left on them. You will then want to clean the ball itself off with a rag of some sort. Once you have done this you can drop the ball back into the bottom of the mouse. You will then replace the retaining ring to hold the ball in place. You can then plug the mouse back in to the computer or put the batteries back in it and turn it on. The mouse is then clean and ready to use again. Cleaning Your Monitor If you need to clean your dirty monitor or display you have to take care if it is a LED or LCD screen. The older CRT screens are glass and can be cleaned in the same manner you would clean any other glass around your house. The LCD and LED screens are more sensitive and can be easily damaged if you do not take some precautions. If this is done correctly, it can be done in less than five minutes. You need to start first by shutting the monitor off. This allows you to see the dirt easier, especially if the screen is dark in color. You will need a soft cloth like a microfiche cloth or something you would use to clean eye glasses. Once this is done you will need a camera. This is so that you can take photos of the inside of your computer. You will also need sticky notes or masking tape so you can label the wires inside the computer and what they are connected to. According to B. Rankin 2005-2012, Label everything as you unplug it so you know where things are to be plugged back in later. Take photos of this as well. These photos will serve as a visual reference when you get to reassembling your computer. Second Step: You want to ground yourself so that you do not cause any static charge to affect the components of the computer. You can do this with an antistatic wrist strap of by touching the metal case. A static discharge can make components not work any longer. Third Step: You now have to remove all of the components inside of your computer tower. Get a little container you can put all of the screws you remove from the components in so you do not lose them. Start by removing all of the cards that are attached to the mother board. This could include a sound card, video card, and memory cards. Place these parts on a clean static free surface. Fourth step: Detach all of the cables and ribbons that are attached to the motherboard and the there devices in the computer. There are usually tabs on the sides of these cords, when squeezed they will be released from where they are plugged in at. There should not be much resistance from the cords and unplugging them. Step Five: Remove the hard drive, optical drives, and anything else that will interfere with the removal of the motherboard. Set these components off to the side on a static free area as well. You will then have the motherboard completely exposed for removal. Step Six: Find the six or nine screws that attach the motherboard to the case. You will need to remove these screws and put them up for safe keeping. Place the old motherboard in the antistatic bag that the new motherboard came in for safe keeping. Power Supply Replacement When replacing a computers power supply you have to insure that you are getting the right one for you system. You have to select the right form factor or style of your computers motherboard. You also have to ensure that the new power supply has all of the plugs that you need to power your computer. You have determined that you have a power supply and it meets your systems requirements, now it is time to start replacing the US. The first thing that you want to do is unplug it from the power source. Once you have completed this you will need to open the side of the computer case to expose the internal components. The US is located to the back top of the case. You will need to label all of the wires that are coming off of the US so that you have them for reference later. Take photos of the wiring before you begin. This will save you some frustration in the end. Once this is done unplug all of the wires that are leading out of the power supply into the main board. You will then locate the mounting screws on the outside back of the case. You will remove all of the screws that hold it in place and carefully remove the US from the case. Make sure that you do not hit any of the other components inside the case while removing it. Once you have the old US out of the case you can mount the new US in the case. You will then hook up all of the new wires referring back to your photos for reference if you need to. Close your case up and you are done. Plug ten computer Dick In to ten outlet Ana turn It on. Shut off the computer until all of the lights shut off and all of the fans have stopped running inside the computer tower. Once you have it shut down you need to unplug the computer from the power source. Then according to Andrews, J, 2009, press the power button to drain the system of power. Once this is done, you can proceed with removing the case of the computer. Read and follow all of the manufactures directions for installing the processor. Finally, use a grounding bracelet to protect your computer and components from and static charges. You will then remove the Processor cover plate by lifting it off of the old processor. You now can see the processor. With you thumb and index finger grab aloud of both sides of the processor and carefully lift it out of the computer. You should place this in the anti- static bag that your new processor came in. Pick up the new processor using the thumb and index fingers on the side of it. Position it over the processor socket. Line up the pins of the socket with the notches on the processor. Keep the new processor level and lower it into place on the socket on the motherboard. Be careful not to touch the pins of the processor or the socket as you could inadvertently damage them. You would then not be able to use them. The next thing you will do is apply thermal grease evenly to the raised square in the center of the processor, Hewlett Packard, 2012. You will then replace the processor cover and secure it in place with the socket lever. If you have purchased the processor fan to cool it you will locate the four holes in the motherboard around the processor. You will push the fan mounting pins through the holes in the mother board and turn them a quarter turn clockwise to lock the fan in place. Tort remove it in the future you will simply turn the pins counter clockwise. Plug the fan in to your motherboard. You can then replace the case of your computer and plug it in to the power supply. A person would do this to help the computer open programs faster or to help to make an unstable system more stable. You will not be able to install more memory than what the motherboard allows. This being said you will need to know your systems limits. You will need to shut down your computer and unplug it from the power source. Next, you should hold down the poser key to drain the system of all power. You can then open the computer case and locate you DIM slots and existing memory cards. Use a grounding bracelet to prevent a static discharge that could hurt the computer system. Next you need to release the clips that hold the memory in the DIM slots on the motherboard. You will remove the memory stick and look at it to determine what speed and what type of memory it is that is installed in your computer. You will then have to buy compatible memory to complete the upgrade if you dont already have it. Once you have it, you can proceed with installing the memory in your computer. When installing the new RAM use your thumbs to seat it in the motherboard. Pushing down with your thumb instead of other fingers to revert the stick going down at an angle is also a good rule of thumb, Steers, K. 2007. The memory stick will click in to place and be secured in the DIM slots. Make sure they are secured on both sides of the slots. You will then be able to close your computer case up. Plug your computer back in to the power source and turn the computer on. If done correctly your computer will open programs faster and be more stable. You can go to the task manager on the computer to check and see if the new RAM is all identified by the computer. If the computer is not recognizing the ram, follow the steps for removing the RAM. Instead of removing the RAM from the computer, look to see if it is all properly in place. Make sure that it is all properly seated and locked in place. Put the case back on and repeat the power up process to check it again. Figure 1 Comatose/Comatose/Getty Images Ensure youre using a hard drive compatible with your computer. Your computer hard drive is failing and making noises when you use your computer and you feel it is time for an upgrade. You ask yourself, how hard is it to change your hard drive in your desktop computer? It is a pretty easy task providing you have taken some time to prepare for the task at hand. One of the first things you want to do is to create an image of your current hard drive or save all of the files that you cannot afford to lose on an external storage device like a flash drive or CD room. This way when you have gotten your computer back up and running you have all of your information to put back on the new hard drive. Make sure that you have everything though because you might lose the information otherwise. Power off your computer, then locate the power switch on the back of your computer and flip it to Off, Hoffman, C. 2012. When installing a graphic card you have to have the computer unplugged and off. You will then remove the case of the computer and locate the existing graphic card. Put on an anti-static bracelet before touching anything inside of the computer. You will then remove the screws that are holding the graphic card in the computer. Next you will remove the card and push the new card into place and secure it with the screws from the old orphic card. Plug your computer in and insert the disk that came with the new card. Your computer will then install all of the right drives from the disk. To install multimedia devices on your computer you have several options. You can plug them in to your computer with the USB ports on the computer if the device has this option. Then you would configure it as above. If it requires to be installed inside the computer, you will have to shut the computer off and open the case. You will locate the appropriate slot on the mother board to connect your device. Secure the device with the screws and plug the cords in to the motherboard. Power up the computer and install the drivers for the device. Your upgrade is now complete. The American government is practically in our everyday lives, including our private lives. The government is basically everything we do. It is the way we work, the reason why we look for a career, the way we eat or drink to conclude, the way we live. Sometimes it is a problem for most citizens but some other times, it is the real reason why they live better and maintain everything they have. The government is the people; it is education, entertainment, peace but can be completely different at certain periods of time. As a prevention from too much government intervention, the people of America have a representative dating since 1773,called the Tea Party Movement. This movement wants the government to stick to the real meaning and intent of the United States Constitution, meaning that the government should not use such law as the Elastic clause. The Tea Party Movement would also like to see the government reducing its speding, lower taxes and reducing the national debt and federal budget deficit. This means in one phrase, relief to the people. And yet, doing so would require more government intervention in our lives. The Tea Party is like the real representative of the people, because it would like to see the government accomplishing everything the people request, which is mostly impossible because to maintain the law, the government has to follow the Constitution. Yet again, some of the government’s interventions are necessary for us, like the famous healthcare and health insurances, the social securities, the military and even the food we eat. The Party thinks we should be left alone to use, organize and regulate our businesses, schools and other utilities. Therefore taking care of our own taxes and national debt. The Party thinks that the government goes too far with the taxation, national spending, and maintenance of public facilities. But surprisingly, it doesn’t disagree with the government totally. It is against the Abortion law in most Sates along with the government. The government should be more active in that field because when it does not give the citizens that kind of help which is necessary to them, it mostly turns against them. I am grateful to the fact that the government has to pay for my education given the fact that I would not be capable to pay for it myself. He then starts having fantasies of her.On the other hand, his wife was also having an affair with a successful colleague. Disregarding his wife’s life, Lester started to make changes in his life after hearing Angela complimented him and suggested that if he worked out, she would like him even more. Therefore, he started working out after being fired from his job, and got a new job at a fast food restaurant. During work, he found that his wife was having an affair and he asked her for a divorce. On the other hand, the marine corporal, Frank, has trust issues with his son, since Ricky had a history of using drugs (smoking weed).One day, Frank starts to get suspicious about Ricky’s actions. Then when Lester called Ricky to get more marijuana, Frank saw them getting together in a room. He thought that they were sexually involved. In reality, they were just smoking weed. When Rick y went home, Frank abused him and mistakenly believed that he was homosexual, which caused him to kick Ricky out of the house. So Ricky decided to ask Jane to runaway with him to New York. At the same time, when Lester and Angela was getting intimate with each other, she suddenly confessed that she was a virgin.Lester realized that he shouldn’t be taking advantage of her and Angela started crying, so he comforted her. After the incident, both of them bonded and shared their problems. On the last scene of the movie, it showed Lester holding an old picture of his family reminiscing the past then Frank suddenly showed up with a gun and shot him. The movie, American Beauty, portrayed many existential themes from philosophers like Franz Kafka, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Jean-Paul Sartre. In the beginning of the movie, Lester indicates he lived like a dead man.He goes through the same routine everyday, which is similar to Franz Kafka’s character Gregor Samsa in the short story â€Å"Metamorphosis†. Before Gregor’s transformation into a metamorphosis, he was a salesman for a long period of time where he felt that had lost his character, goals and even estranged himself from his family. Lester and Gregor have committed themselves to the society, which caused them to be alienated by their families. In the beginning of the movie, Lester’s daughter critiqued her father as a â€Å"loser† and his wife also looked down on him.Gregor had similar situations, he was also alienated because his job required him to travel, and therefore, he couldn’t spend time with his family. According to Kafka, one has to go through alienation because that awakens us to blossom into a new life. He believes that an individual have to balance themselves between individuality and society. Even though Gregor’s transformation gave him a new life, it was too late for him to live for himself. On the other hand, Lester was lucky enough to experience the change when he heard Angela’s suggestion to get fit.This tip encouraged Lester to adjust his dull and melancholy life. He starts working out and live for himself, instead of living up to other people’s standards. Kafka’s view of existentialism is that an individual has the responsibility to find balance between leisure and work. Lester’s character has some similarities as Kafka’s life. Kafka was employed at an insurance company, where he had experienced the suffering from working in the dull cubical office. He used writing as a way to escape from the tedious life he had, and it was the only method that could explore his creativeness.Even though Kafka was not an existentialist, his writing depicted many existential themes and shared similar thoughts with other philosopher like Friedrich Nietzsche. Friedrich Nietzsche is a philosopher in the late 18th century. He has a great impact towards existentialism. His existential theme is about individua lity and constructing identity. Through his book called Gay Science, Nietzsche indicated that there were more liberation and freedom after religious wars and persecution ended. He believed that people were getting detached with religion.Even though the movie â€Å"American Beauty† did not have any religious related themes, it still portrayed the theme of liberation. It was freedom that saved Lester from being drowned by his miserable life, especially when he was being disregarded by his wife and alienated from his daughter. In addition, in the end of the movie, Ricky Fitts, the neighbor’s son was released from his father because of a misunderstanding. He was trapped under his abusive father’s rules and control. When Ricky was living under his father, he was like the â€Å"last man† in Nietzsche’s short story: Thus Spoke Zarathustra.The â€Å"last man† lacks passion and has no drive: â€Å" †¦ they do not like to hear the world ‘c ontempt’ applied to them. Let me then address their pride. Let me speak of them of what is the most contemptible; but that is the last man† (Soloman, 73). Lester also has similar characteristics of the â€Å"last man†. Before his transformation, he even confessed that he was living a life of a â€Å"dead man†. Nietzsche saw the â€Å"last man† among the middle class and he was afraid that they would be suffocated by the dreadful office space. This greatly relates to Lester’s working environment and the suburban area where he lived.Everyday felt like yesterday, nothing changes. There is no creativity or passion in Lester’s life and Nietzsche believed that people should be pushed and encouraged to break the cycle. Lester’s transformation speaks of Nietzsche’s existentialist theme: â€Å"we philosophers and ‘free spirits’ fell, when we hear the news that ‘the old god is dead. ’ As if a new dawn sho ne on us†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (68). The â€Å"new dawn† that Nietzsche mentions in his book have similar portrayal in the movie, which is Lester’s transformation of his new life. From a miserable and coward person, Lester changed into a new courageous and free spirited individual.He was able to confront his wife and make his own decisions without being afraid of her looking down on him: â€Å"It's a great thing when you realize you still have the ability to surprise yourself. Makes you wonder what else you can do that you've forgotten about† (American Beauty). Overall, Nietzsche’s theme reveals that people have the ability to make their own decision and put their destiny into their own hands just like what Lester did with his life. Similar to Kafka and Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre also emphasized the importance of individuality.He believes that â€Å"existence comes before essence,† people creates their own destiny and it is not God that controls our fate (206). He also explained that human nature did not emerge because God created us. Sartre did not believe in God; therefore, he believed human created the existence of human nature, like how Lester altered his life. Sartre also indicated that individuals should take responsibility towards their actions. Lester broke away from the society and left his past life to construct a new character without other people to disapprove his decisions.However, he also threw away all the responsibility as a father and husband. Lester quit his job and got a lower salary job, which left his wife in charge of the mortgage. Even before the transformation, the relationship between Lester and his daughter drifted apart causing them to ignore each other. He failed to take a responsibility as a father and nurture his child instead he tried to flirt with his child’s friend. From Sartre’s book Existentialism is a Humanism, he wrote: â€Å"Our responsibility is thus much greater than we had supp osed, for it concerns mankind as a whole† (208).He believed that an individual’s action could have a huge impact on others, just like how the neighbor, Colonel Frank Fitts killed Lester at the end of the movie. Frank has to live carry that guilt forever. It was his decision to kill and therefore it would be his responsibility to accept the blame. However the movie did not indicate what consequences Frank will be facing, or what kind of responsibility he will get after the murder. The director leaves the decision to the audience to decide what his fate is going to be. Lester did mess up his family and take no responsibility during his physical and mental transformation.In the end of the movie, when Angela, his daughter’s friend, told him that she was a virgin, he realized that he could not take advantage of her. This message reminded him that she was just a teenager that needed attention. He took a parental responsibility by comforting her and explored her frustra tions, which applied to Sartre’s theme of taking responsibility while making alternations in life. Through out the movie, American Beauty, it has exposed many existential themes that connected to multiple philosophers including Franz Kafka, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Jean-Paul Sartre.All of them emphasized the importance of individuality, passion and creativity, which was depicted in the movie, especially on the main character, Lester. He altered his life and cured his mid-life crisis. It was through existentialism where he was released from the trap of society and the controlled environment. In the end of the movie, every character found an answer towards the purpose of life.
